Introduction:

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is a young Indian professional badminton player. She is one of prominent faces of Indian Badminton in the world arena. She made her international debut in 2009. 

Early Life:

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu was born in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh (now Telengana ). Her father P. V. Ramana mother P. Vijaya both have been national level volleyball players. Her father was a member of the Indian volleyball team that won the bronze medal in 1986 Seoul Asian Games, received the Arjuna Award in 2000 for his outstanding contributions. 

Born in a family where everyone is fond of sports, as usual Sindhu was also attracted to it. Although she choose badminton over volleyball. She got her inspiration from the success of Pullela Gopichand, the 2001 All England Open Badminton Champion. 

She attended Auxilium High School. She was good at studies in her childhood and wanted to be a doctor. Sindhu started playing Badminton when she was just eight. Sindhu first learned the basics of the sport with the guidance of Mehboob Ali in Indian Railway’s badminton facility. And later joined Pullela Gopichand’s badminton academy to enhance her skills. Sindhu is till date (as in 2019) coached by Pullela Gopichand. Notably, he is also the chief coach of the Indian Badminton team. Thereafter, she enrolled herself in St. Ann’s College for Women to pursue MBA. 

Career:

Sindhu made her international debut as a Badminton Player in 2009 in the Sub-Junior Asian Badminton Championships in Colombo and won the bronze medal. Next, she played at the 2010 Iran Fajr International Badminton Challenge, where she bagged the silver medal in the singles category. In 2011, she won a Gold medal in the singles event at the Douglas Commonwealth Youth Games. It was the turning point of her life. 

However, her best performance came in 2012, when she defeated the 2012 London Olympics gold medalist Li- Xuerui of China at the Li- Ning China Masters Super Series competition. In 2013, Sindhu became the first Indian women’s singles player to win a medal at the Badminton World Championship. Subsequently, she defeated Japanese Nozomi Okuhara in the semifinals of the 2016 Summer Olympics. However, Sidhu was defeated by Carolina Marin in the 83-minute final match, winning her a silver medal at the Summer Olympics. In 2018, she secured the World Tour title after defeating Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the 2018 World Tour final. 

She became the first Indian badminton player to win silver medal in Olympics. He won the silver in 2016 Rio Olympic. She also won the Silver Medal in women’s singles at the Asian Games (2018).

Achievements:

• She received The Arjun award in 2013 for his outstanding performance in sports and ranked 1st in Forbes India’s list of top 22 young achievers.
  
• In 2014, she was listed as the Indian of the year by NDTV. Sindhu was appointed as the Deputy Collector by the Andhra Pradesh Government after she won the silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. 
  
• She received the Padmashree, one of the highest civilian awards in India in 2015 and the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2016. In August 2019, she became the first Indian to win a Badminton World Championships gold medal. 
  
• She rose to a career high world ranking of no. 2 in 2017 however her current ranking is 6 as of October, 2019. She was the flag bearer of Indian Teams in the opening ceremony of 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Conclusion:

Indian Badminton is mostly associated with two players nowdays, Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu. As for Sindhu at the age of just 24 she already achieved many things, and by her determination and hard work she will achieve more in the upcoming years.
