Introduction:

Former captain of the Indian cricket team, Sourav Ganguly is one of the best batsmen in the team. He is a Bengali and for all his reputation he is known to everyone as 'Dada'. His extraordinary playing strategy has made Bengali, non-Bengali a lot of fans. The way he has handled the Indian cricket team as a captain for a long time is truly admirable.



Childhood Life:

Sourav Ganguly was born on July 8, 1972 at the classy Brahmin family in a place called Behala in Kolkata. His father's name was Chandidas Ganguly, who was a flourishing print businessman and his mother Nirupa Ganguly was a housewife. His father Chandidas Ganguly was one of the wealthiest people in Kolkata. Sourav's elder brother, Snehashis Ganguly, was a cricketer on the Bengal cricket team.



Study:

From an early age he was talented in his studies. He graduated in Commerce from St Xavier's College, Calcutta. Later, He received Ph.D.

Married Life:

In 1997, Sourav married Dona Roy, his childhood girlfriend. From a very young age they had a love affair. But the two families never accepted their relationship. After a few years, the situation was favorable, with the consent of the two families, the marriage was officially completed by Sourav and Dona. In 2001, they had a daughter named Sana.



Cricket Life:

Since his elder brother Snehashis Ganguly was a player, he was the first to encourage Sourav Ganguly to play cricket. As a kid, Sourav used to train in cricket. His brother, Snehashis, and his father Chandidas Ganguly were like this, but his mother did not like when Sourav came to playing cricket. He did not want Sourav to take the game as a profession. But he kept playing. He played for the first time in the Ranji Trophy 1990-91, where he played against the West Indies. But he did not score well in this match. As a result, he was dropped from the team. 

He then played the Ranji Trophy of 1994-95, where he scored well, allowing him to play in the Duleep Trophy of 1995-96. He then pitched with Rahul Dravid at Lord's Ground and played three Test matches against England. He scored a century in this match and won the hearts of everyone. He also scored a century in the Test match at Trent Bridge. He was a player on the Indian team who scored a century in his first two Tests. He also scored 113 runs in the one-day series against Sri Lanka the following year, and won four man-of-the-match awards later this year. 

In 1998, India won the third final of the Independence Cup in Dhaka. They scored a total of 315 in 48 overs and were awarded the Sourav Man of the Match award. In the same year, Indian cricket lost to Australia in a match in Kolkata, where Sourav took three wickets. Sourav also participated in the 1999 World Cup cricket, where he scored a century against Sri Lanka. By 2000, he was selected as captain of the Indian cricket team. Under his leadership, India won five ODIs against South Africa and reached the final of the 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy. He scored a double century in this match. 

In 2001, India played a one-day match against Australia, where India defeated Arsenal. The great performances by the Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif in the NatWest series at Lord's next year are reminiscent. Sourav saw his extraordinary performance as he wave his clothes on the field of Lords, which is still very memorable to every one of his fans. Under his leadership, the India team reached the World Cup final in 1983 after 1983. But here they lost to Australia. In this match, Sourav Ganguly had 465 runs with three centuries. By 2004 he made his debut as a successful Captain of Team India. But the following year he was dropped from the team, replacing Rahul Dravid as captain. 

In 2006, he again joined the team with the help of Greg Chappell. He then played a Test match against South Africa and scored 83 runs. Team India won by virtue of their outstanding performance. He then performed well against Sri Lanka and he won the Man of the Series title. His performance at the Cricket World Cup of 2007 was also excellent. He then joined the Indian Premier League team Kolkata Knight Riders as captain in February 2008. In the first match they defeated Royal Challenger Bangalore. He was dismissed as captain of the KKR team in 2009 and replaced by Ma ccullum as captain. But in the fourth season of the IPL, he started playing for the Pune Warriors. He served as Captain and Mentor of this team.



Achievements:

  • He was the only cricketer who have win four consecutive Man of the Match awards in One Day Internationals. 
  • He was also the first player to score three centuries in the history of ICC Champions Trophy. 
  • He was the highest run scorer in ODI history and second among the Indians with 11,363 runs. 
  • He holds the record for registering the highest individual score by any batsman in an ICC Champions Trophy final. 
  • He was the second fastest batsman to reach 9000 ODI runs after AB De Villers of South Africa who broke Ganguly’s record in 2017. 
  • His Test Batting average never went below 40. 
  • He has the highest individual score by an Indian batsman in the Cricket World Cup. 
  • He is one of the only five cricketers to have achieved the unique treble of 10,000 runs, 100 wickets and 100 catches in ODI cricket. 
  • He is India’s most successful Test Captain overseas, winning 11 out of 28 matches that he lead. 
  • He is one of the fourteen cricketers in the world to have played 100 or more test matches and 300 or more ODIs. 
  • He was honoured with Padma Shri award by A.P.J Abdul Kalam in 2004.
